Vadivelu

Vadivelu Comedian

One of the finest film comedians in India today, Vadivelu is an absolute delight to watch.

A separate comedy track featuring Vadivelu is a sine qua non in successful Tamil movies these days.

Whether as the college student in Sachein, Karate instructor in Pokiri or Vijay's Man Friday in Madurey, Vadivelu leaves the viewer dazzled.

The range of Vadivelu's expressions and his deadpan impression as he delivers his dialogs are simply hilarious beyond words.

Not only is Vadivelu far ahead of Vivek, his only rival in Tamil movies; we also think Vadivelu is even better than that yesteryear comedian Thai Nagesh, who delighted us in our childhood many decades back.

Usually at the receiving end of insults and blows in most of his films, Vadivelu provides welcome relief from the run of the mill stock of Tamil movies.

It's often said that Tamil film directors sign up Vadivelu first and then scout for a hero and heroine. We have no reason to doubt the veracity of that statement.

Vadivelu's recent movies include Vel, Pokiri and Indiralogathil Na Azhagappan.

Vadivelu's forthcoming movies include Dasavatharam and Vyapari (where the comedian will play Spiderman).

Vadivelu hails from Madurai and is nicknamed Vaigai Puyal (Vaigai Tempest) after the Vaigai river, which flows through the temple city.

Sometimes, the comedian is referred to as Vedivelu (firecracker).

Besides his obvious popularity in Tamil Nadu, Vadivelu has a growing fan base with the Indian diaspora in USA too.

Vishal

Vishal Introduction

A young Tamil film star, Vishal has mostly focused on action films - the genre of sophomoric Tamil movies where the hero comes off victorious after simultaneously fighting a dozen or more well armed thugs.

Although not in the same league as his older peers like Vijay and Surya, Vishal has the potential to give them stiff competition.

As with most Indian movie stars, Vishal is a mediocre actor. No matter. Indian audiences do not generally hanker for a Marlon Brando, Al Pacino or a Meryl Streep. All that Indian movie fans crave on the big screen is some action, a bunch of decent songs and a few pretty babes wearing skimpy dresses.

Vishal's first film Chellamae (with Reema Sen as co-star) proved to be a hit at the box office and there has been no looking back since for this youngster. His successive films Sandakozhi and Thimiru were also popular with audiences.

But Vishal's latest movie Satyam sets a new nadir in Tamil movies a.k.a. Kollywood with pathetic acting, silly stunt scenes, mediocre screenplay and lousy music coming together to produce a horrow-show.

In line with the current trend in the Indian film industry where heroes and heroines are usually children or siblings of older actors or directors, Vishal also possesses the advantage of close links with the movie business. His father is the Tamil movie producer GK Reddy while older brother Vikram Krishna Reddy was the producer of two Vishal starrers - Sandakozhi and Thimiru. His sister-in-law Shriya Reddy was his co-star in Thimiru.

Vishal's first film Chellamae (with Reema Sen as co-star) proved to be a hit at the box office and there has been no looking back since for this youngster. His successive films Sandakozhi and Thimiru were also popular with audiences.

Born on August 29, 1977, Vishal is not a Tamilian but a Telugu. Several of his movies including Thamiraparani, Thimiru, Sandakozhi and Chellamae have been dubbed in the Telugu language.

Vishal will next be seen in a cop movie called Sathyam, where his co-star is Nayanthara. Two Tamil cop movies Kaakha Kaakha (Surya) and Pokiri (Vijay) have become big hits in recent years.

Vijay

Vijay Introduction

Vijay is a Tamil film star, whose recent films Vettaikkaran, Villu , Kuruvi and Azhagiya Tamil Magan have proved to be duds at the box office.

Villu, Kuruvi and Azhagiya Tamil Magan lacked the entertainment appeal of Vijay's previous movie Pokiri, where he plays a rowdy and is paired opposite heroine Asin.

Pokiri proved to be a big success in India and with the diaspora outside. A remake of the successful Telugu film of the same name, Pokiri was a slick action movie focusing on the activities of a vicious criminal called Tamil (Vijay).

However, Vijay's earlier movie Aathi (2007) with Trisha as his co-star proved to be a dud and met with a poor reception from the audience. Some of the Vijay movies that have found favor with the audience include Thirumalai and Ghilli.

Vijay made his debut as a hero in the 1992 Tamil film Naalaya Theerpu and has acted in 45 films so far. He dropped out of the Bachelors Degree of Visual Communications program at Loyola College to pursue a career in films.

Interestingly, several of Vijay's successful movies including Pokiri, Kadhalukku Mariyadhai and Ninaithaen Vandhai are remakes of movies first made in other languages.

Born on June 22, 1974 to Tamil film producers S.A. Chandrasekaran and Shoba Chandrasekar, Vijay is married to Sangeeta. The couple have two children Sanjay and Divya Saasha.

Vijay is fondly known as Ilaya Thalapathy (Young General) by his fans.

Jyothika

Jyothika Introduction

One of the worst actresses in Tamil movies, Jyothika is a well known film star.

A reasonably pretty and chubby girl, Jyothika is a distressing spectacle on screen for movie afficionados looking beyond physical attributes of the heroine.

Jyothika's entry into Tamil language films came after she failed to make headway in Hindi movies. Her first Hindi film Doli Saja Ke Rakhna opposite Akshaye Khanna did not set the cash registers ringing and she headed south.

Although it's hard to pick Jyothika's worst film since she is pretty bad in most, if pressed we'd say she's eggregiously bad in Thenali, Mayaavi, Pachaikili Muthucharam and Mozhi. In both Pachaikili Muthucharam and Mozhi, the young lady is just plain awful.

Try as we did, we cannot expunge from memory her distasteful performance as a deaf and dumb girl in Mozhi opposite the talented Prithwiraj Sukumaran.

Besides Surya, Jyothika has acted opposite several top Tamil heroes including Vijay, Kamal Haasan, Sarath Kumar, Rajnikanth, and Silambarasan.

Jyothika's terrible performances notwithstanding, she was quite popular with Tamil movie audiences which have a preference for plump and fair North Indian girls.

Jyothika married Surya on 11 September 2006 in a big ceremony in Chennai.

Following her marriage, the young lady has bid adieu to Tamil movies, a long overdue move by the reckoning of some Tamil film lovers.

Born on 18 October 1978, Jyothika is the daughter of film producer Chander Sadanah.

Jyothika's sister Nagma is a well known Bhojpuri film actress.

Surya

Surya Introduction

Surya essayed a stellar performance as the police officer Anbuselvam in Kaakha Kaakha directed by Gautam Menon. A fast paced, slick movie, Kaakha Kaakha is that rare amalgam of love, action, tragedy, scintillating music and superb photography. Surya was paired opposite Jyothika in Kaakha Kaakha.

Another noteworthy Surya movie is Ghajini (2005) where he's featured as the young man suffering from severe head trauma sustained during a murderous assault on his girlfriend. Ghajini is based on the English film Memento starring Guy Pearce.

But most of Surya's other films are eminently forgettable.

His latest movie Ayan, a love story featuring Tamanna, Prabhu is an ugly movie beyond redemption and offers zero entertainment value. Zilch.

His earlier movies Vaaranam Aayiram featuring Sameera Reddy, Divya Spandana and Jillunu Oru Kadhal, a love story featuring Jyothika and Bhumika Chawla, failed to click with the audience and was a damp squib at the box office.

Recently, Surya dubbed for Abhishek Bachchan in the Tamil version of the Abhishek Bachchan-Aishwarya Rai Hindi film Guru.

Born on July 23, 1975, Surya started his career in Tamil movies in 1997 with Nerrukku Ner. Prior to his entry into movies, Surya worked at a garment factory in Ambattur. He attended Loyola College in Chennai and holds a degree in commerce.

Surya married Tamil film heroine Jyothika on September 11, 2006. He has a younger brother Karthik, who's now getting his toes wet in Tamil movies, and a younger sister Brindha.

The First Great Screen Comedian, Charles Chaplin was also one of the most gifted directors in history, in addition to being a formidable talent as a writer and composer. the son of music hall performers from England,he began working on the stage at age five. He was a popular child dancer and got work on the London stage, eventually moving up to acting roles, it was while touring America in 1912 that Chaplin was spotted by Mack Sennett, the head of keystone Studios, and he was signed to them a year later. After a disappointing, relatively non-descript debut, Chaplin began evolving the persona that would emerge as his most famous screen portrayal, The Little Tramp, and after his first 11 movies, Chaplin began to manifest a desire to direct By his 13thfilm, he had shifted into the director's chair , and also emerged as a writer.

Chaplin's movies at Keystone established him as a major film comedian and afforded him the chance to adapt his stage routines to the screen. He net moved on to Essa nay Studios , where he had virtually complete freedom, and The Little Tramp became an established big-screen star. In 1916,Chaplin went to Mutual , earning an astronomical 10,000 dollars per week under a contract that gave him absolute control of his films- the Mutual titles, most notably The immigrant and Easy Street, are still counted among the greatest comedies ever made. These modestly proportioned two-reelers were followed by Chaplin's move to First National Studios, where he made lengthier, more ambitious, but fewer films, including the comedy The Kid, which was the second highest grossing silent film after D.W.Griffith The Birth of a Nation, and made an overnight sensation of his co-star, Jackie Cooqan. By this time, Chaplin had become an international celebrity of astatus that modern audiences can only imagine because he achieved his success through comedy. With three other screen giants, Mary Pickford,Douglas Fairbanks Sr., and D.W.Griffith. he founded United Artists, the first modern production and distribution company, and achieved further renown as a director with A Woman of Paris two years later. In 1925, he made what is generally considered his magnum opus, The Gold Rush.

Chaplin's success continued into the sound era, although he resisted using sound until Modern Times in 1936. He had his first failure in 1940 with the anti-Hitler political Satire The Great Dictator at about the same time that his personal life- he had been involved in several awkward problems with various women, including a paternity suit filed against him by aspiring actress Joan Barry - began to catch up with him. Chaplin's career during the immediate post- World War II period was marred by continuing problems, as his pacifism and alleged anti-American views led to investigations. He also made the black comedy Monsieur Verdoux which failed at the box office. It was followed, however, by the best of his sound comedies , Limelight, which, because of his legal difficulties, didn't open in Los Angeles until two decades later- when its score, written By Chaplin, received an Oscar, A king in New York, in 1957, and The Countess From Hong Kong, made nine ears later, closed out his career on a lackluster note.

After D.W. Griffith, Chaplin was the most important filmmaker of the silent film era.Through his clear understanding of film and its capabilities, and his constant experimentation - he frequently ran through hundreds of takes to get just the right shot and effect he wanted - he set most of the riles for screen comedy that are still being followed, and his onscreen image remains one of the most familiar.

Achievements - Rajinikanth is an immensely popular actor of the South Indian film industry. Recipient of the coveted Padma Shri Award in the year 2002, he has worked in a string of hit films like Murattukaalai, Pokkiri Raja, Thanikattu Raja, Naan Mahaan Alla and Moondru Mugam.

The most unique feature about Rajnikanth's acting is that he can enact comedies, drama, suspense and thrillers with absolute ease. In recognition of marvelous contribution to Indian cinema, he was recently awarded the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in the year 2002. To know more, read on this biography of Rajnikanth.

Rajinikanth hails from a Marathi family of Bangalore in the Karnataka state and was the fourth child of his parents, Jijabai and Ramoji Rao. Although his mother tongue is Marathi, yet Rajinikanth never acted in any Marathi movies till date. His childhood was spent in poverty and he worked as a bus conductor prior his film career. However, it was during this period that Rajnikanth sharpened his acting skill by participating in various theatre plays. In the year, 1973, he joined the Madras Film institute to acquire a basic course in acting.

Initially while working in Tamil cinema, Rajinikanth was given supporting roles like that of a cancer patient in the 1975 film, Apoorva Raagangal directed by K. Balachander. Balachander gave Rajnikanth the name, by which the world now acknowledges him. But it was director, SP Muthuraman who actually revamped Rajinikanth's image by casting him in varied roles. For instance, Rajnikanth was given a positive role in film, Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri (1977). By this time, film Mullum Malarum had Rajnikanth a firm foothold in the Tamil film arena.

The period from 1980 to1989 was the real turning point in the career of Rajnikanth as it took him to soaring really high. However, Rajinikanth abruptly decided to leave acting, but ultimately was coaxed back into it after sometime. He starred in Billa that was a remake of Amitabh Bachchan's Don and it turned out to be a blockbuster hit silencing all his critiques. This was followed by more successful films like Murattukaalai, Pokkiri Raja, Thanikattu Raja, Naan Mahaan Alla and Moondru Mugam.

That popularity of Rajinikanth can simply be gauged by the fact that even two decades after the release of his old hits, they continue to make profits at the box office. K. Balachander's first home production, Netrikan proved to be yet another milestone in Rajini's career. And in his 100th movie, Sri Raghavendra, he played the Hindu saint Raghavendra Swami. Another of Rajnikanth's recent hits was Shivaji released in the first half of 2007.
